How To Write Introductions That Gather Momentum

If your content has passed the “scan test”, your audience will read your introduction. To make sure your introduction connects with your audience, your introduction must speak to the problem your audience is facing. Remember, people only care about what is important to them. And, what’s important to your audience is the problem they are facing.

A great introduction consists of four (4) parts: exciting opener, define problem, provide solution, set expectation.

Exciting Opening Sentences

The opening sentence is the most important part of your blog post. It’s what captures your reader’s attention and sets the tone for the rest of your article. It’s important to start with an interesting and exciting opening sentence that will grab your reader’s attention.

The following are some examples of good opening sentences to get you started:

  • "Ever since I was a child, I always wanted to be a writer."
  • "I was sitting on my couch when I realised that I had forgotten to do something important."
  • "There are so many things we take for granted in life."

Define The Problem & The symptoms

Your audience is looking for a solution to a problem. In order for you to engage your audience you must show that you understand the problem they are looking to solve. A great way of doing that is to discuss, and identify the symptoms. A symptom is something that happens in addition to the underlying problem. If you know the nature of the problem and pinpoint the symptoms your audience is having, you can connect on a deeper level and build trust. This will lead to your audience choosing your solution addresses their needs.

The following are some examples of good problem and symptom statements to get you started:

  • “Are you depressed? Here are some of the signs of depression to look for”
  • “Are you struggling to lose weight? Some common reasons why people struggle are”
  • “Did you know that 8 out of 10 people will only read your copy heading? Maybe this is the reason your content going unnoticed?

Provide Your Solution

Your solution is the antidote to the problem and is the “sneak peek” at the step-by-step actionable content that you will be sharing in the body of your blog. This is also a quick snapshot of the product or service that you sell that will solve the problem and the symptoms your audience is experiencing.

A great way to position your solution is with an “I/we have found”. For example “I have found that when I follow the simple steps described below, I can alleviate 80% of the symptoms”.

Set Up The Expectation

This is the last part of the intro, a sneak peeks of what's coming up. Here we let our audience know what the benefit is for them, and what they will be able to do once they're through with reading your blog. Remember, readers, want actionable content.

Always focus on the positive outcome for your audience such as “
With a little strategy and set up too can write great blog copy like the savvy creator you are.” and try to avoid boring waffle such as "Today, I'll be writing about X,Y, and Z."
